SDAB (The Swedish Tyre Recycling Organisation) has, together with the public opinion company Kantar Public, mapped the state of knowledge regarding tyre recycling among the Swedish public.
The results show, among other things, that 94 per cent have a positive attitude towards tyres being recycled and turned into new products.
In collaboration with the polling company Kantar Public, SDAB conducted a survey with the aim of getting a better idea of the general state of knowledge about the tyre recycling value chain, from collection to use.
The survey was conducted via Kantar Public’s nationally representative and randomly recruited online panel, the Sifo panel. A total of 1000 people were interviewed with the Swedish public between the ages of 18 and 79. The results show, among other things, that the majority of participants have a positive attitude towards tyres being recycled and recycled to become new products.
“Since the beginning of the year, SDAB has had a new operating model with the ambition of increased recycling of end-of-life tyres. We aim to achieve a result that indicates a positive attitude towards the use of the material in other areas of use,” says Fredrik Ardefors, CEO of SDAB.
At the same time, the results show that knowledge about recycled tyre material, collection rate and areas of use, as well as what the tyre recycling system means in practice for consumers, is relatively low.
“What tyres are is common knowledge, but the fact that the results show a lower knowledge of what happens when they reach the end of life status, and the possibilities of tyre recycling was an expected result. However, the new operating model provides other opportunities to educate and inform about tyre recycling and the recycled tyre raw material,” says Frida Grunewald, communications manager at SDAB.
SDAB will continue polling to increase the perception of how the state of knowledge is developing among the general public in Sweden.
“In connection with the modernisation of Sweden’s tyre recycling system, we hope that the recycled tyre raw material will have a different role and increased value. There is therefore value in periodically conducting opinion polls to develop tyre recycling in a continued positive direction,” says Ardefors.
