Tyres to Soles for Japanese Shoes

TREAD&GROOVE transforms discarded tyres into shoe soles

Tyres into Shoe Treads

Japanese shoe brand TREAD&GROOVE make good use of tyres destined for landfill. The brand name comes from the tread pattern moulded into the shoe sole, but tyres play an important part in creating the claimed high-grip treads.

TREAD&GROOVE claim that the tyres the brand uses usually weigh about 9.93 kg, and when incinerated, emit 26.8125 kg of carbon dioxide, they say. “Thinking about what we can do about waste tyres, led to the launch of this brand. by using scrap tyres for the outsole of sneakers, carbon dioxide emissions per pair can be reduced by 8.9375kg,’ the brand stated.

The company achieved the desired results for their soles after having undergone 14 blend tests and 33 prototype productions. The result is a tyre-based sole that maximises flexibility and reduces weight while maintaining the properties of the tyre.
