Tyre Dumping Becomes an Issue in Belgium

Residents of Nalinnes in the Belgian region of Wallonia have been disturbed to find that tyre dumping has been on the increase in their area.

Clear Upsurge in Tyre Dumping in Wallonia

Reports suggest that for the second time in recent weeks a lorry load of tyres has been dumped at the roadside. Local press suggest that the carrier has been paid to collect the tyres and then, instead of taking them for recycling, he has simply dumped them at the roadside. Of course, Belgium has an EPR tyre recovery scheme in the form of RecyTyre, and in theory this should not happen as no-one gets paid for their role in recycling until they present their paperwork. Retailers do not pay collectors at the point of service.

This follows reports of illegal dumping in Hainault, also in the Walloon region of Belgium.

Yves Binon, the Mayor of Ham-sur-Heure / Nalinnes, said: “This is inadmissible and outrageous. I immediately called the police to investigate because … throughout the area these dumps are developing everywhere. The environment police and the Walloon Region must make every effort to find those people who are polluting and who put the cost of treating this waste on the back of the community. If they were paid to collect these tyres, I believe that the value must be in the tens of thousands of Euros.”
