The TRA endorses the move by the Australian government to prohibit the export of most unprocessed end-of-life tyres from December 2021. The only exception will be casings suitable for retreading or validated reuse.
TRA supports Australian Export Ban
Peter Taylor, Secretary General of the TRA has urged DEFRA Secretary of state George Eustice MP to intensively study this change in Australian law and consider whether the UK should follow a similar path. Taylor continued; “We in the TRA view this move by Canberra to be progressive and sensible as it will not only drive forward greater domestic tyre reprocessing in Australia but also ensure that exported material heads for more environmentally acceptable uses abroad.
“It is our view that the UK and other countries should follow this very sensible initiative which we are pleased to note was actively promoted by a cross-section of the entire Australian tyre industry!”
It is worth noting that the UK could easily have the capacity to process all its tyre arisings within the UK, but the obstacles to developing the industry are the ease of exporting without processing, and the lack of support for end markets.
