Kal Tire, the mining tyre specialist, has long been working on plans to recycle OTR tyres in Chile.
Long Awaited Chile Plant for OTR Finally Under Construction
The project has been subject to delays in planning and compliance, but construction finally began in May 2019.The plant will be finalised by October 2019, and will be located in the Industrial Quarter of La Negra, Antofagasta, Chile, on an area of 60,000 m2.
It will generate greater employment, environmental benefit and carbon footprint reduction. The plant was designed and manufactured in Europe, and allows, by thermal conversion process (pyrolysis, heat in the absence of oxygen), recycling tyres of 4 meters in diameter and more than 4 tons of weight. Tyres will be sectioned and sliced for handling before entering the twin set of autoclaves, according to the recently released Kal Tire video. The project will process 7,300 tons per year and plans to expand its capacity to 25,000 tonnes.
