Holcim Argentina to Burn Tyres

Jujuy province in Argentina will use waste tyres to make cement. The agreement was formalised between the company Geocycle, of the group Holcim Argentina, with the government of Jujuy.

New Stage for Holcim Argentina

Jujuy will be the first Argentinian province to apply this state-of-the-art technology for the co-processing of end-of-life tyres, and integrate it into the cement production process in an environmentally safe way, with an investment of 20 million pesos.

“Co-processing offers better environmental performance than other alternative solutions,” said Oscar Enríquez, manager of Geocycle, the world leader in waste management services. The procedure is to take advantage of the energy value of waste to achieve a full integration into the cement production process, without leaving any type of waste and under the highest environmental standards.

The technology to produce the clinker, the raw material to produce cement, requires fuel and very high temperatures in the kilns, so “we are valorising the tyre from its energy contribution as a fuel,” added Enríquez.

The initiative also seeks to ensure that citizens do not dump tyres, but deliver them to the municipalities responsible for collecting and taking them to the plant located in the town of Puesto Viejo, in the south of the province.
