A working drum shell does not necessarily have to be made of wood. Many manufacturers now build entire drum kits from materials such as carbon, acrylic or various composites. The prerequisites are a round shape (although there are exceptions) and a certain stability. Both also exist with a product that we all see every day on roads and fields: car tyres.
Tyres to Drums
Drummer Chad Montermini thought the same thing when he drove past a tractor tyre on the side of the road in 2020. That thought grew, and after a few attempts he had made a playable prototype out of a truck tyre and was so impressed by the fat sound that he decided to establish the Tacky Boy Drum Company.
He now uses old tyres of different sizes, and equips them with lugs, skins and bass drum feet.
The sounds move between dry and powerful rock sounds up to fluttering “808”-style kicks. The drums are not lightweight, but when it comes to the coolness factor, the Tacky Boy bass drums probably cannot be beaten (excuse the pun).
