Ongoing low-level tyre dumping is an issue across the USA
Washington State Fish and Wildlife officers are asking people to stop dumping tyres in the Colombia Basin of the Colombia River.
They say the problem is ongoing, and recently they recovered some 500 tyres from the river.
The issue is a symptom of the lack of cohesion in tyre recovery in the USA. It follows an ongoing series of tyre amnesties and clear up days across the USA. If the tyre recovery system were fully functional, these events would probably be less frequent.
The tyres were sent to the Department of Ecology’s waste tyre collection programme. Still, Fish and Wildlife said a better option is for people to take advantage of local tyre recycling programmes instead of dumping them on public land.
The Columbia Basin Wildlife covers more than 192,000 acres, including the Ancient Lakes and Frenchman Coulee areas outside Quincy.
