The Saskatchewan government says it will spend up to $3.3 million to clean up more than 6,600 tonnes of scrap tyres at a defunct recycling plant.
Tyre Clearance to cost $3.3 Million for Saskatchewan
The Assiniboia Rubber Recycling plant closed in February 2014 and the company that operated it went into receivership later that year.
That left residents of the town with an eyesore and the government with the responsibility for the mess.
Environment Minister Dustin Duncan says the province and Tire Stewardship of Saskatchewan will work together on the project.
Duncan says any contaminated site in Saskatchewan becomes a risk to public health and safety if it is not managed properly.
Tire Stewardship of Saskatchewan is a non-profit corporation that was established in 2017 to serve as the scrap tyre recycling program operator in the province.
