In late January two commercial-scale fly-tipping incidents were reported in the UK press. The first in Sunderland, where 250 tyres were dumped on a rural road. The second was in Suffolk, where some 500 tyres were dumped on a farm.
Illegal Dumping Still an Issue in the UK
The costs to clean up these flytipping incidents will be met by Sunderland Council and the landowner respectively.
The continuing incidences of the flytipping of tyres indicate that there are still some retailers, or perhaps used tyre dealers, who are continuing to act contrary to the voluntary tyre recycling practices in the UK.
It is the duty of the retailer to ensure that the tyres he gathers in the course of his work are stored properly, and disposed of with a duty of care. The retailer should ensure that the collector has the required paperwork and that the destination for the tyres he passes on is also licensed and legitimate in its operation.
If tyres are being flytipped in these volumes, then there must be retailers and collectors who are bypassing the specified procedure.
Police have requested that anyone witnessing any flytipping should report the crime using 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800555111
